Puritan's Opti-Swab in RT-PCR

A recent study showed the performance evaluation of Puritan’s Opti-Swab™ Liquid Amies Collection & Transport System Medium, using real-time Q-PCR in the detection of Bordetella pertussis, a causative agent of Whooping Cough.
Puritan’s Opti-Swab™ (LA-117) was found to be an effective and reliable collection and transport choice for detecting Bordetella pertussis by real-time PCR. Diagnosing B. Pertussis requires a nasopharyngeal or oropharynx swab that is sent to a laboratory for Gram Stain, which includes growth on an agar plate. The study went as far as suggesting that the DNA yield was more than sufficient even at the lowest concentration at refrigerated and room temperature with Quantitative real-time PCR. This, along with previous studies presented earlier, demonstrate that Puritan Opti-Swab™ is a highly effective and economical option for Bordetella pertussis culture as well as real-time PCR method.

This study, entitled, “Performance Evaluation of Puritan Opti-Swab™ Medium in Detection of Bordetella pertussis Using Real Time Q-PCR”, was presented at the 115th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology in New Orleans, LA held in May, 2015.

Puritan UniTranz-RT validated for Viral Sample Storage at Room Temperature

One of the biggest challenges in off-site specimen collection is maintaining the viability of the sample during collection and transport.
Of particular concern is the transport temperature and the time the specimen remains in transport and storage.
As a general rule, specimens should be transported at or below room temperature. The optimal window for transport for diagnosis is 48 hours, but many times weekend delays mean a sample may be stored for longer periods—often without proper refrigeration.

A recent study published in the April 2015 issue of the Journal of Medical Microbiology found that Puritan’s UniTranz-RT™ was able to support the viability of clinically relevant viruses at two different temperates of storage through 72 hours.
Study results demonstrated that UniTranz-RT has the ability to support the viability of clinically relevant viruses at both 4˚C (39.2˚F) and at room temperature (between 20 and 26 °C [68 and 79°F]), for up to 72 hours.
Researchers concluded that the “viral transport media tested in this study are excellent clinical microbiology tools for microbiologists.”

Flock swabs
Flocking refers to a process of applying short fibers to an adhesive-coated surface, which turns the swab into a velvet-like brush.
